Local individuals and families will benefit from the new fund established by Te Atawhai Aroha Compassionate Communities Rotorua Trust with the Geyser Community Foundation.
Te Atawhai Aroha is a not-for-profit group of volunteers working together to help whānau and the community prepare for death, loss and grief.
Co-chair of Te Atawhai Aroha, Steve Chadwick said we want everyone in our local community to be able to plan ahead, to be able to access the support and equipment they need and know about natural burial options.
“With forward planning and access to knowledge / tikanga, people will gain confidence and know what to do as they plan for the end of life for themselves or whānau / family.
“As well as promoting advance care planning, Te Atawhai Aroha works alongside community groups, health agencies and hospice, including local organisations not affiliated with central or local government and government agencies.
“We want to live in a world where every person, every whānau and community has the capacity and knowledge to uphold the mana of people who are losing their independence, dying or grieving.
‘Establishing the endowment fund with the Geyser Community Foundation is part of Te Atawhai Aroha’s long term funding strategy for a stronger and more sustainable future.
“Supporters are now able to make donations, including making provision to leave a gift in their will, at any time.
“Donations made to the fund will be managed by Geyser and the capital retained forever.
“Once our fund reaches its investment target, the interest earned will benefit Te Atawhai Aroha year on year, forever.
“The money will be used where it is most needed to keep the service running.”
Geyser looks after the administration, investment, compliance and governance of the fund, on our behalf.
“We hope local people, particularly those who have received care, advice or assistance from us will give back by making contributions to our new fund.”
Donations of any size can be made at any time by direct banking or by credit card through Geyser’s website here: https://geysercf.org.nz/donate/
Geyser will issue official donations receipts to all donors.
Geyser’s Chairman, Helene Phillips congratulated the Te Atawhai Aroha for choosing to establish a professionally managed endowment fund with the Foundation.
“The perpetuity model ensures a sustainable income stream meaning the fund will return far more to the service over time than a one-off donation.
“Over time the fund will strengthen Te Atawhai Aroha and enable trustees and staff to spend more of their energy on their core business and less on fundraising.
Ms Phillips said community foundations are the fastest growing form of philanthropy in the world.
“We’re different because we’re not about one single cause: we’re about a place and its people.
“Based on a well-established, globally successful model, the network has been growing in Aotearoa New Zealand since 2003.
“Community foundations are independent, not-for-profit organisations run entirely by volunteer boards made up of local people; we run a lean model so we can keep fees low.
