Scholarships

Scholarships and Award Opportunities

Some of our generous donors have chosen to make provision for scholarships and awards through the Geyser Community Foundation.
The specific criteria and application deadlines vary, so be sure to check details carefully.

Applications open 1 July and close on 31 August each year.

Below is the list of the scholarships and awards that are currently available this year. The specific criteria and application deadlines vary, so be sure to check details carefully.

Although we have many scholarships available, they can be categorised into three main groups (click on category name to jump to this section).

ARTS

Michael Pilaar Memorial Music

Four scholarships are available to assist the development of young musicians’ skills.

EDUCATION

Beverley Anaru Memorial Scholarship Fund

Applications will open 1 July 2023
2022 Value:  Undergraduate Scholarship $5,000 each (up to 8 available annually) / 2023 Value – tba
Scholarships aim to assist full-time students who whakapapa to Te Arawa to complete a recognised tertiary qualification that will enrich their own life experience, community and ultimately, Aotearoa New Zealand as a whole.
Applicants must be full-time students who whakapapa to Te Arawa and who are enrolled at a New Zealand tertiary institute in a NZQA recognised course.*

Robert and Jacqueline Mowbray Fund

Applications will open 1 July 2023.
2023 Value:  tbc
Funding assistance is provided to students of any age, who would not normally have an opportunity to get the most out of their education.
Recipients must live within the Rotorua District and surrounding rural areas, and be attending, or have attended schools in the Rotorua District.
Applicants must not have opportunities to access funding from other grants.*

Kaingaroa Roading Scholarship

Applications will open 1 July 2023.
2023 Value:  tbc
Residents of Kaingaroa, Minginui, Ruatahuna, Te Whaiti, Murupara and the immediate surrounding areas can apply for assistance from the this Fund.
The scholarship is for educational purposes for people who have completed their secondary school education or who are in their final year of secondary school. The scholarship can be used, for example, for study at a university, polytechnic or private training provider located in New Zealand, or for the study costs associated with an apprenticeship.

Margriet Theron (formerly known as Speech NZ)

Up to four Scholarships are available to residents in the Rotorua and Taupo District communities for the Associate of Speech NZ examination fees.

Norman Steele Memorial Scholarship

Applications Open Now and Close: 31 January 2023
2022 Value: $5,835
One scholarship is available to a student who can whakapapa to Te Arawa, and who is studying medicine full-time at one of the two registered Medical Schools in New Zealand. Applicants must have completed one year of full-time study at the Medical School at either Auckland University or Otago University.

Peter, Joan and Kay Dean Reporoa Educational Past Pupils Award

Applications will open 1 July 2023.

The Peter, Joan and Kay Dean Reporoa Educational Past Pupils Award is for former students of Reporoa College who want to retrain or upskill.

FAMILY/WHANAU SUPPORT

Ross Bohm Fund

Applications will open 1 July 2023.
2023 Value:  tbc
Disabled sportspeople in the Rotorua and Taupo District communities benefit from the Ross Bohm Fund.
Applicants must currently reside in the Rotorua or Taupo District communities.*

Cockburn Fund

Applications will open 1 July 2023.
2023 Value: tbc
Individuals with chronic long-term disability who live in the Taupo District community receive assistance from this Fund. Gifts are made for the provision of specialised disability equipment, including vehicle modifications and associated home modifications, and disability costs which are not covered by the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC). Members of the Muscular Dystrophy Association of New Zealand residing in the greater Lake Taupo area have priority access to the annual gift.*

Ngatuku Farms Fund

Applications will open 1 July 2023.

The Ngatuku Farms Fund provides assistance to individuals (children and adults) who have special needs or who are physically or intellectually disabled, or to an organisation which supports special needs or disabled clients. Applicants must live within the Rotorua District.*

Rotorua Women’s Club

Applications will open 1 July 2023.

Gifts from the Rotorua Women’s Club Fund are open to women and women’s groups based within the Rotorua District community who are committed to creating positive change for local women and girls in one of the following areas: Arts, Education, Family Welfare, Health or Sport.
