The Peter, Joan and Kay Dean Reporoa Educational Trust Fund

With the recent announcement of a national Erebus memorial to be erected in Christchurch, it feels timely to reflect on the story of the Dean family and the remarkable legacy they have created through Geyser Community Foundation.
The Dean family story is a powerful example of how one local family transformed loss into lasting good for their community.
Kay Dean was the only child of Reporoa farmers Peter and Joan Dean. She was just twenty two when she tragically lost her life in the Erebus disaster. Bright, ambitious and deeply community minded, Kay had already completed her law degree, served in the Territorials, and was training for her commercial pilot licence. Those who knew her remember her determination, generosity of spirit and belief in investing in people and the future.
Even from great tragedy, generosity grows.
Inspired by Kay’s values and her belief in creating opportunities through education, Peter and Joan established the Peter, Joan and Kay Dean Reporoa Educational Trust Fund. Today, the fund is proudly managed by Geyser Community Foundation, ensuring it is protected, grown and distributed in a way that honours Kay’s memory and her family’s intentions.
Income from the fund supports Reporoa College and former students to retrain or upskill. This includes opportunities for further education, professional development and pathways that strengthen individual futures and, in turn, the wider Reporoa community. Each grant reflects Kay’s enduring connection to the place she called home and her belief in supporting others to reach their potential.
Legacy funds like the Dean family fund demonstrate the power of long term giving. They ensure that generosity does not end, but continues to grow and respond to community needs over time.
As plans progress for a national Erebus memorial, the Dean family legacy stands as a quiet but enduring tribute. One that continues to create opportunity, strengthen community and turn remembrance into positive, practical impact.
