About Community Foundations
Community Foundations bring together people who care about their communities. They are independent, charitable organisations that strengthen their communities by:
- Facilitating philanthropy
- Partnering with donors to build endowments
- Supporting community projects
- Providing community leadership.
Community Foundations are the fastest growing forms of community philanthropy worldwide. They provide sustainable, long-term solutions. Most of us grew up in a time when the government took care of social needs, education, housing and health. We all know this is diminishing. At the same time, many of us have the means and desire to do something for our community, to better the place where we live and where our families will live for generations to come. Most of us are thinking of how we want our community to be now and in the future. The charitable impulse the willingness to help others is a universal human instinct. Community Foundations, both here in New Zealand and around the world, provide the opportunity for people to act on that impulse.
Community Foundations are much more than a mechanism for allocating funds. They are about working with and for the community, connecting people with similar ideals. Since they are local organisations with local board members at their helm, Community Foundations can be flexible and responsive to both community and donor needs. Community Foundations enable people to be involved in growth and development. The Foundations can build permanent assets and resources that will benefit a community for generations to come.
With your help, your Community Foundation will build a substantial amount of money from the contributions of people of all ages. The Foundation will use income from these funds as community investments (grants). That way it meets the communitys charitable needs and opportunities now while building a legacy for the future.
